Having comparable data and reporting is crucial for overcoming existing gaps in the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) industry. Currently, the inconsistency in approaches and limited availability of component-level data make assessments of energy storage systems challenging. PNNL’s beta BESS life cycle data inventory template aims to alleviate these challenges by improving both the accuracy and adoption rate of evaluations and streamlining the process by which this data is to be collected and reported across all stages of the BESS life. By offering clear guidelines and an open-source framework, the template supports regional comparability and encourages collaborative efforts, advancing the resilience and efficiency of BESS manufacturing practices.
The data template for BESS highlights the importance of data-driven decision-making, focusing on energy security and cost reductions. PNNL’s initiative aims to improve data quality, foster industry collaboration, and stimulate innovation within the BESS sector.
